Producing a multicam video production can be a rewarding project. The actual process of considering what equipment is needed how it will be configured and used is challenging and represents a big step in your development as a videographer.
Multicam takes you to a level where you can record a live performance from different angles at the same time. For video recording multicam scenes can be completed much faster than when you must shoot each angle separately with only one camera.
Multicam requires planning to ensure that each step passes the feed to components that are ready to process the information as you need to be handled.
Lighting is an essential consideration as you must be able to match the video of all the camera feeds. If you’re not in a well-controlled location, you will have an opportunity to correct problems later but fewer fixes means less work and a better production overall.
You’ll need some specialized equipment for muticam but the whole set-up may not be as complicated or as expensive as you might imagine.
You start by considering your location as a video studio. For an easy example, let’s shoot a stage production indoors from three angles. Set up the cameras and microphones in their positions to capture the action from three angles. We’ll call the locations Cam1, Cam2 and Cam3 and each location will have the needed lighting available.
The first processing step is where the signal is switched among the three location feeds and then sent back to distribution. The audio level is balanced and mixed resulting in the desired number of channels. Each video feed is processed to render your planned look for the program. You will want an additional monitor at that step to preview the output.
The switcher chooses which video feed to use. Next, the program feed gets sent on to distribution.
The distribution amplifier splits the signal and transmits to the connected equipment. In our example the video has three destinations (1) a recorder for a hard copy (2) a screen for immediate viewing and (3) a stream encoder for streaming over the Internet.
The equipment on this example: Cam1 to Cam3, Audio Mixer, Preview Monitor, Switcher, Distribution amplifier, Capture Recorder, Stream Encoder and a video monitor for immediate viewing.
